Optimisation of Cruise Flight Parameters for an Aircraft Cessna Citattion III

Justinas Alekna

Abstract

Flight planning is one of the most important parts of preflight preparation. The classic method which uses tables is out of date, because it takes too much time and has a high risk of human error. Special planning programs are only available for high profit companies and require computers with high computation power. Nevertheless there is an alternative solution. A computer program based on high-level technical computing language used in MatLab program may be implemented. Almost any laptop meets the requirements for MatLab, therefore it could be used by any individual flyer or enthusiasts. It is capable to:

  • Compute flight parameters required for steady, non accelerated flight by using Newton-Raphson iterative method.
  • Compute optimum flight level and speed that requires least engine thrust by using Steepest Descent optimization method.

Results were compared with the ones achieved using classic method and shoved only minor deviation, which confirms that this tool is working properly and may help to save time during preflight preparation.
