The Effect of Environmental Radiation Upon the Aviation Staff Health

Oksana Slauta

Abstract

Effective radiation dose due to cosmic radiation at sea level in Vilnius region is about 0,04 µSv. The dose rate which is caused by cosmic radiation increases with altitude due to the decrease in attenuation of cosmic radiation by the atmosphere. Dose rates for international flight crews are ten times higher than at sea level. For this reason constantly flying crew members may obtain higher doses than defined in regulations. To evaluate potential effective doses, which may be received by members of aircrews, some calculations were carried out with the help of the code CARI-6. Such parameters as flight route, solar activity, duration and altitude of flight were taken into account. The results were compared with the data obtained in other studies and with regulations.
