Review of Aviation Accidents and Incidents Caused by Miscommunication
Abstract
Aviation history is full of tragic accidents. Most of them could have been avoided if people were prepared in advance for them. Unfortunately, we all know that these things catch us by surprise. My article will examine the accidents and incidents that could have been avoided if not for the language barrier. These accidents can be attributed to the following events: 1976 mid-air collision between Inex Adria DC-9 and British Airways HS-121 Trident 3B over Zagreb, 1977 collision on the runway at Tenerife, 1990 Avianca Flight 052, 1996 mid-air collision in India between Saudi Arabian airlines Boeing 747 and Kazakhstan airlines Ilyushin IL-76. I will also mention a few incidents which ended fortunately.
